The applications of telemedicine are numerous. In veterinary medicine it started with radiology, particularly ultrasound images.
Now with the technology we started doing transmission of radiographic images and now it expands to cardiology,
with ultrasound radiographs, EKGs, and even heart sounds and its expanding right now into
ophthalmology, dermatology, internal medicine and practically any speciality can take advantage of telemedicine.
The benefits of telemedicine are primarily to make accessible the expertise of specialists
to general practitioners and pet owners without having to transport the animal to a different facility.
So we basically make my expertise available to practitioners and pet owners within a few minutes.
Without telemedicine the pet owner has to get an appointment with a specialist then take a day off work
to transport the pet to the specialist and of course that consultation is usually more expensive so,
to the pet owner telemedicine is rapid, efficient and very cost effective.
Telemedicine can be used proactively, in the past and it still is used reactively by many veterinarians
which means they will use telemedicine only when they are facing a challenging situation.
The problem with that is that staff are usually not trained so it cannot be done effectively.
We have many clients that use telemedicine proactively which mean they introduce systems in their practice,
they have trained their technicians and their staff to send us every x-ray that is obtained in that practice.
That way it can be done extremely efficiently and cost effectively.
The focus of today’s workshop was taking software that we developed for radiologists to the next level,
to train and help veterinarians be better at reading radiographs themselves because we predict that very soon
there will not be enough radiologists to provide telemedicine services so
by helping veterinarians be more efficient in reading x-rays themselves then we can provide a wider service.
